If you’ve encountered any print or online marketing for dental offices these days, you’ve likely seen the term “dental implant” thrown around quite often. You might have learned that dental implants are used for replacing natural teeth that were knocked-out in an accident, or needed to be extracted by a dentist – but that doesn’t help answer the question of “What is a dental implant, exactly?” This question is an important one to answer, especially if you have missing teeth yourself and are looking for a better way to replace them.
We are a Cherry Hill, NJ dental implant office who has the necessary team of trained and experienced specialists to provide expert dental implant placement for missing teeth. But first things first, let’s go over what a dental implant actually is:
The short version is that a dental implant is a substitute tooth.
To get into more detail, a dental implant is a replacement tooth that is made up of three pieces:
- A titanium rod (this looks something like the body of a screw)
- An abutment (essentially, a connector)
- And a dental crown (a piece of porcelain, ceramic, or porcelain-over-metal that is carefully designed to look just like a natural tooth crown)
All of these pieces together form a faux tooth that completely replaces a natural tooth that had to be taken out or was accidentally knocked out.
Now that you know what an implant is, you might be wondering, why would I choose getting a dental implant or any other method for replacing teeth?
Like your real tooth, a single dental implant is independent – it stands on its own and functions on its own, without needing the support of surrounding teeth to make it work, like a dental bridge or partial denture would require. Plus it is user friendly to clean. Dental implants are also versatile – if you have several missing teeth, our office places a few dental implants and then attaches either a bridge or dentures, so you get a solution for missing teeth that is sturdy and permanent.
